Connecting as a family during the Holidays

Thank you Culver’s for sponsoring this post.

This holiday season we are busy. We are going on a nine day cruise with all the kids. We have a couple staycation-work plans. We have theme park visits. And of course the normal hustle and bustle that comes with the holidays. Gift shopping, decoration shopping, and holiday parties. With all this chaos that’s going on, it’s important to us, as a family, to connect and have uninterrupted family time. When we go too long without an intentional family dinner or outing, I notice the kids’ behavior starts to change.

And it’s completely understandable. As an adult, I even start to feel overwhelmed, and ultimately get moody. So when my kids show the same behavior, I know we’re past due for uninterrupted family time.

So within this post, I’m going to share one way that you can connect with your kids during the busiest season of the year and some fun conversation starters.

My tip for reconnecting as a family during the Holidays:

Have an intentional family dinner at your favorite spot: We LOVE burgers, and we love Fresh Frozen Custard. Put those 2 things together, you have Culver’s. When I think of somewhere that we can gather together as a family, and eat and there is something for everyone with so many menu options. Culver’s is the first place we collectively think of. From the moment you walk into Culver’s you are greeted with warm smiles, and amazing hospitality. Not that I’m anyone special, but they treat me like they personally know us – that to me says a lot. When you’re crazy busy running around getting gifts, the two things you want is great customer service and delicious food, and Culver’s gives you just that.

  • When you go, make sure you try their ButterBurgers – these are hands down the best!! And also give their Concrete Mixers and Fresh Frozen Custard a try.
  • Make sure you visit your local Culver’s by Dec. 29 to receive a coupon for a free Value Basket when you purchase $30 in gift cards, CLICK HERE to find a Culver’s near you.

Have a device free family night: As a blogger working during 4th quarter (the busiest months of the year for a blogger), and my husband working from home 80% of the time, we are almost ALWAYS connected. And I find myself relaxing with my kids, while checking an email, or adding another Christmas gift in my shopping cart. So having a device free dinner or entire night is important for reconnecting as a family.

Conversation starters for kids:

While at dinner at your favorite spot, here are some conversation starters that get the entire family engaged. Even the 2 year old.

  • If you could have any superpower what would it be? Why?
  • What is one nice thing you did today?
  • What is your favorite day of the week? Why?
  • Who are your best friends at school?
  • What would be the ultimate family vacation?
  • What is your favorite vacation we’ve been on so far? Why?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up?
  • If you could change your name, what would it be?
  • Would you rather be a cat or a dog? Why?
  • When you lay down at night, do you fall asleep immediately? or do you think about stuff? What do you think about?
  • How do you make friends? Do you say hi? Or do you wait forth to say hi first?
  • If you could paint your room any color, what color would it be?
  • What’s your favorite food mommy and daddy cook?
  • Do you like cafeteria food or packed lunch?
  • What’s your favorite smell?
  • What’s your favorite outfit?
  • What’s your favorite holiday? Why?
  • Tell me your favorite joke!
  • Who is your best friend?
  • What theme do you want for your next birthday party?

Those are just a couple conversation starters, but these ones always get our kids going and it’s a fun way to just live in the moment and not think about any holiday stress. I hope this post inspired you to head to your nearest Culver’s for your next family night, and just reconnect as a family in the midst of the holiday season.
